Once the lake closes and the day-trip traffic drops off, the Mt. Gretna Fire Company's event list becomes one of the more reliable ways to know what's happening in town on a given week. Wing Night at the Hideaway runs Sept. 14. The Pig Roast, a longstanding fundraiser at the firehouse itself, is set for Sept. 26. Neither event shows up on a tourism site. Both are the kind of gathering that exists because a volunteer fire company needs to raise money and knows its neighbors will show up.

The Trail Becomes the Point
Governor Dick, formally the Clarence Schock Memorial Park at Governor Dick, doesn't run on a seasonal open-close schedule the way the lake does. Its more than 14 miles of trails and its 66-foot observation tower, built in 1954, are open year-round, but the reason to go changes with the calendar. Through the summer, the appeal is shade and a break from the heat. Once the lake closes and the leaves start turning, the same trail network becomes the destination in its own right, with the tower delivering views across five counties that are worth the moderate 1.5-mile climb regardless of what else is happening in town that week.
